Organic Cotton
This refers to cotton grown in an environment without the use of chemical fertilizers or synthetic pesticides. In conventional cotton cultivation, various pesticides and chemical fertilizers are used to stabilize yields and quality, which can result in soil deterioration, water pollution, and health risks to farmers. However, organic cultivation avoids these, which is said to conserve soil and maintain ecosystems and improve the working environment of farmers.
At MITTAN, we use third-party certification such as GOTS as one of our indicators, but we also use kala cotton from India, which is grown using traditional and environmentally friendly farming methods, even though it is not certified. The basic properties of cotton, such as moisture absorption, moisture release, and durability, do not change significantly depending on the growing environment, and chemical processing such as bleaching and finishing may be used when commercializing. The biggest difference from regular cotton is in the efforts made at the cultivation stage, such as soil conservation, ecosystem maintenance, and consideration for farmers, and we place the utmost importance on these points.
