Hand-woven
This is a traditional technique in which a shuttle is passed by hand through the warp threads stretched in front and behind the loom, and the weft threads are woven in one by one. The warp threads are opened with a foot-operated treadle, and the weaver adjusts the force used to pass the shuttle through, freely controlling the tension of the warp and weft threads. This fine tension adjustment creates a unique unevenness that is difficult to achieve with machine weaving, and rhythmic bumps are engraved on the surface of the fabric.
The weaver weaves while feeling the movement of each thread, so slight differences in appearance appear depending on the rhythm of the beating and the way the shuttle is inserted. Even with the same thread and pattern, each bolt of fabric has its own unique character, and the regular yet exquisitely offset gaps and light reflections give the fabric depth. The greatest appeal of hand-woven fabric is its simple and unique texture.
