Restoring Value through Repair
We do not believe that only untouched, brand-new items hold value. When necessary interventions are applied, a product acquires a singular character that cannot be replicated. Alongside the time and processes invested up to completion, the technique and discernment of the person who mends it are reflected in the piece.
At MITTAN, we repair or re-dye items that developed tears, stains, or discoloration during production—pieces that would ordinarily be discounted as “seconds” or discarded—and we offer them at the regular price without lowering their value. By respecting the accumulated steps and labor inherent in making clothing, and by treating their traces as characteristics of each garment, we preserve value and connect it to continued wear.
For the example shown in the photographs, areas where the fabric had been pierced were repaired using cotton thread with a technique known as darning. Because cotton thread is used, future re-dyeing will color the stitches in the same tone as the fabric, maintaining a unified appearance.
Repair methods are chosen to suit each individual piece. At times we apply bold stitches in deliberately contrasting colors; at other times we work with thread that matches the fabric and make the stitching as discreet as possible. The repaired garments take on a character distinct from mass-produced items, and are offered primarily at our Kyoto directly managed store.
Through these practices, we hope you will sense the richness of making—not only in creating from new raw materials, but in cultivating further value by working carefully with what already exists.
